CLimate change IMpacts and ADAPTation group
Dr. Christos Giannakopoulos participated , among other representatives of the scientific community and local government, and civil protection agencies, in the Ionian Islands’ Civil Protection Day which was held on June 11, 2025 in Lefkada Island, co-organized by the Regional Association of Municipalities of the Ionian Islands (PED-IN) and the Region of the Ionian Islands (P.E.Lefkada).
The event was a substantial opportunity for coordination, exchange of experience and scientific documentation around the increasing challenges facing the region due to the climate crisis and geodynamic phenomena. The aim was to strengthen preparedness and cooperation between all the critical links of civil protection in the Ionian Islands.
Christos Giannakopoulos was a featured speaker at the event and his speech was about "Climate change and its impacts on the wider Ionian region"
Dr Christos Giannakopoulos attended the ECMWF’s 8th General Assembly of the Copernicus Climate Change Service between 2-4 June in Valencia, Spain. The General Assembly is an exciting moment to connect with C3S service providers as well as with representatives of EU institutions and agencies, Spanish stakeholders and ECMWF’s partner organisations. The programme offered ample networking opportunities in between engaging plenary and poster sessions. Climadapt Group participated with 2 poster presentations.
Parina Machaira, from CLIMADAPT team, participated in the 17th International Congress of the Geological Society of Greece, which was held in Mytilene, Lesvos Island (Greece), in the Aegean region, during May 28-31, 2025, and was hosted at the University of the Aegean. Her poster presentation was titled “Assessing the Impact of Climate Change on Olive Cultivation in the Peloponnese, Greece: A Long-Term Analysis Using Climate Indices”.
Christos Gianakopoulos, Giannis Lemesios and Gianna Kitsara, from CLIMADAPT team, attended the 1 day event on the LandEval project - "Land evaluation system for agricultural use in view of the climate crisis", which was held on May 23, 2025, at the Benaki Phytopathological Institute ( Kifissia, Greece), with the support of the Green.
Christos Giannakopolos made an oral presentation titled "The climate scenarios as a planning tool for agricultural resilience’’. The web (online) LandEval platform was presented, and a discussion was open regarding Agricultural Production in Greece in 2050 with suggestions for improvement, and adaptation.
The Institute for Environmental Research and Sustainable Energy of the National Observatory of Athens (IERSD, NOA) and the Energy Policy Unit – DSSLab of the National Technical University of Athens (EPU, NTUA) had the pleasure and honour of co-hosting a guest lecture by the Head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Emeritus Professor in Sustainable Energy at Imperial College London, Sir Jim Skea, on “Climate Change in 2025: What science is telling us”, on Tuesday 13/05/2025, 16.00 EEST, at the Ceremonial Hall of National Technical University of Athens.
In the context of a series of research projects such as ChoiceEU and AdaptiveGreece / LIFE-IP Project the lecture focused on the latest scientific evidence regarding the physical science basis, impacts and adaptation, and climate change mitigation, as well as on the role of the scientific community, through the processes of the IPCC, ahead of its 7th Assessment Report (AR7) cycle.

After the lecture, the audience had the opportunity to engage in a discussion with Prof. Skea in Q&A, moderated by Dr. Alexandros Nikas (NTUA).
Giannis Lemesios and Gianna Kitsara, from CLIMADAPT team, participated in the 3-days workshop for Climate Change Adaptation in the Epirus Region,in the framework of LIFE-IP AdaptInGR project, which took place in the headquarters of the Region in Ioannina, from 6 to 8 of May 2025.
CLIMADAPT team had oral presentations titled as: 'Future Climate in the Region of Epirus' , 'Online tools developed within LIFE-IP AdaptInGR and use of climate indices' and participated in the conversations during panels and several sections of the workshop.
The seminar supported, discussions on agriculture, livestock, forests and biodiversity as well as Impacts of climate change in mountainous areas and coastal zones and natural adaptation solutions that demonstrated the importance of implementing appropriate adaptation measures in both the mountainous and lowland areas of the Region
Dr Christos Giannakopoulos presented ‘’ The impacts of climate change in the Adriatic and Ionian Region’’ during the “Accelerating climate change adaptation in the Adriatic-Ionian Region” event in Corfu, Greece The event was organized by the Hellenic Presidency of the Adriatic-Ionian Region (EUSAIR) for 2024–2025, in collaboration with the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Hellenic Ministry of Economy and Finance, and the Region of Ionian Islands, and was initiated by the integrated project «LIFE-IP AdaptInGR - Boosting the implementation of adaptation policy across Greece» (funded by the LIFE Programme of European Union and the Green Fund of Greece). The event aims to bring together all key adaptation stakeholders and trigger urgent action to improve climate resilience in the Adratic-Ionian Region.
Anna Karali participated in the stakeholder meetings held in Athens (20/3) and Thessaloniki (10/4) as part of the project “Projecting the impacts of climate change on forest ecosystems in Greece – An integrated forest vulnerability and mitigation framework.” During these meetings, she presented her research on the projected future risk of forest and peri-urban fires in Greece.
Dr Christos Giannakopoulos was one of the main speakers in the training workshop ‘Army and Climate Change :Prevention - Adaptation - Impacts of Climate Change’ organized by the Hellenic Army General Staff. The one day event was held at the Armed Forces Officers' Club (LAED) in Athens. Dr Giannakopoulos’ presentation was about ‘Climate Change, Extreme Events and Impacts in Greece with emphasis on the Armed Forces.
Dr Christos Giannakopoulos was one of the main speakers, in the first one-day event for the shading industry, organised by the Hellenic Solar Shading Association (HSSA), on December, 2 2024, at the Benaki Museum (138 Pireos St., Athens), titled “The Contribution of Shading to the Energy Efficiency of Buildings”. Dr Giannakopoulos talked about ‘’The challenges of the climate crisis & its long-term impacts on Europe & Greece’’.
