CLimate change IMpacts and ADAPTation group
Dr. Christos Giannakopoulos (M) is a Research Director at the National Observatory of Athens (NOA). His research focuses on climate change modelling of impacts and extremes on various sectors such as agriculture, tourism and forest fires. He was a lead author of the IPCC's 4th Assessment Report on Climate change impacts and adaptation: Europe Chapter (published in 2007). He is NOA’s Principal Investigator in several climate change related EU projects (e.g. FP6 ENSEMBLES, FP7 CLIM-RUN, LIFE ADAPT2CLIMA, H2020 SOCLIMPACT, C3S European Tourism). He has co-authored the National Adaptation Strategy. He is the IPCC National Focal point since 2018, as well as representative of the Mission on Adaptation Sub-Group of the Horizon Europe Shadow Program Committee since 2019. Dr. Konstantinos Varotsos (M) holds a Bachelor Degree in Physics (NKUA, 2005), an M.Sc. degree in Environmental Physics (2008) and a Doctorate in Physics (2015) in the Physics dept. of the same univ. His Ph.D. Thesis was upon the impact of Climate Change on the future chemical composition of the Atmosphere (funded scholarship). Conducted parallel research within the activities of the Numerical applications in the atmosphere Group at the Environmental Physics & Meteorology Division of the same dept. and univ as well as the as in the Climate Change Group at the IERSD/NOA since 2008. From 2015 he is working as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Climate Change Group conducting research on the impacts of climate change and adaptation on various sectors such as air-quality, agriculture, tourism, urban environment and human health. He is/was involved in a number of Climate Change related projects such as ENSEMBLES, CIRCE, LIFE-ADAPT2CLIMA (Adaptation to Climate change Impacts on the Mediterranean islands' Agriculture), LIFE-URBANPROOF (Climate Proofing Urban Municipalities), MED-GOLD (Turning climate-related information into added value for traditional MEDiterranean Grape, OLive and Durum wheat food systems, HORIZON 2020) He has published 14 articles (4 as a first author) in peer reviewed journals and 21 articles in conference proceedings. Anna Karali (F) holds a BSc in Physics (University of Crete-Greece,2007) and an MSc in Environmental
Physics and Meteorology (NKUA-Greece, 2010). She is currently a PhD student at the Department of Geology
and Geoenvironment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in Greece. Her thesis focuses on
the simulation and assessment of potential fire risk in global and regional scale in the framework of
climate change. Since 2010, she has been working as a research fellow at the IERSD-NOA in the Climate
change and ADAPTation group, participating in several EU funded projects with focus on climate change
impacts, climate services and decision support tools (e.g. C3S European Tourism, H2020 SOCLIMPACT, INTERREG
DISARM). She has authored and co-authored 13 articles in peer reviewed journals and more than 40 abstracts
in conference proceedings.
Research interests: Assessment of climate change impacts for the sectors of forest fires, agriculture and tourism,
vulnerability and risk assessments as well as adaptation strategies focused on the Mediterranean region. Anna Karali CV
Giannis Lemesios (M)holds a BSc in Environmental Management (University of Ioannina, Greece, 2004) and MSc in Environmental Sciences (University of Patras, 2007). He is currently a MSc student in Geo-informatics (Harokopio University of Athens) as well as a PhD candidate at the School of Chemical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. His PhD thesis focuses on the vulnerability assessment and adaptation to climate change in important economic sectors of Greece such as agriculture and tourism. Since 2011, he has been working as a research assistant at the IERSD-NOA participating in several EU funded projects with focus on climate change impacts and adaptation such as LIFE ADAPT2CLIMA (agriculture), LIFE URBANPROOF (urban), DG ECHO projects: TREASURE, TRIBUTE, EXTREMA (urban), LIFE 10 CYPADAPT and LIFE IP ADAPTINGR (energy, health, tourism, agriculture). Dr. Gianna Kitsara (F) holds a Bachelor Degree in Physics [National Kapodistrian University of Athens
(NKUA)-Greece, 2004)] an M.Sc. degree in Environmental Physics (NKUA-Greece, 2007) and a Doctorate in
Physics (NKUA-Greece, 2015) in the Physics (funded scholarship). She has conducted a post-doctoral
research (2016-2017) investigating the impact of urbanization on changes in solar radiation and
evaporation in Greece, funded by the National Scholarships Foundation. From 2018 she is working as a
Postdoctoral Researcher in the Climate Change Group conducting research on the impacts of climate change
and adaptation on various sectors such as agriculture, tourism, urban environment and human health. She
is/was involved in a number of Climate Change related projects such as, LIFE-TERRACESCAPE , LIFE-IP
AdaptInGR , LIFE-ADAPT2CLIMA , LIFE-URBANPROOF. She has published 9 articles in peer reviewed journals
and 22 articles in conference proceedings.
Research Interests: Climate change and impacts on various sectors, analysis and investigation of evaporation/evapotranspitation, solar radiation, precipitation and climate and drought indices using ground observations, data from regional climate models, statistical analysis of long time series.
Gianna Kitsara CV
Dr Tim van der Schriek (M): born and raised in the Netherlands, he obtained an MSc in Physical Geography at the “Vrije Universiteit” in Amsterdam in 1998.
Hereafter he gained a PhD in Earth Sciences at the University of Newcastle (UK) in 2004, while working as a
teaching assistant. From 2003-2005 he was a Post-Doc at Newcastle university, and from 2005-2011 a lecturer <
in Physical Geography. From 2012 onwards he is a researcher at the National Observatory of Athens. He has participated in numerous multi-disciplinary research projects and has extensive research experience in geomorphology, (palaeo-)hydrology and climate change. His research is published in over 20 peer-reviewed international journals and presented at more than 30 international conferences. Finally, he has a wide-ranging experience in developing grant applications and policy-relevant documents, and a proven ability in designing successful outreach activities to transfer knowledge.
Research interests: Climate change impacts on natural systems, geomorphology, (palaeo-)hydrology, limnology

Myrto Gratsea (F) studied Physics at the Natural Sciences & Technology Department of the Hellenic Open
University and graduated in 2009. She received her M.Sc. in Environmental Physics from the Applied
Physics Department of the National & Kapodestrian University of Athens in 2013. She started a PhD in 2014
in the field of ground-based remote sensing for the assessment of urban pollution. She has been a member of
the Aerosol Monitoring Station of the National Observatory of Athens since October 2008
(she has participated in campaigns and has experience in in-situ measurements) and she is also in charge of
the operation and data retrieval of a MAX-DOAS remote sensing instrument. She has also been working in
research projects focused on climate change since 2017. She has participated in research projects and
campaigns (Cityzen, Thermopolis 2009, ACI-UV, Xenios, CHARADMExp, Κripis, Αristotelis, Emission,
Urbanproof, Adapt2Clima). She has published 8 articles in peer reviewed journals and 23 articles in
conference proceedings.

Vassilis Tenentes (M) holds a Bachelor Degree of Electrical and Computer Engineering [Demokritos University of Thrace - Greece, 2004)] an M.Sc. degree in Basic Physics (National Kapodistrian University of Athens - Greece, 2008). Since 2013, he has been working as a research assistant at the IERSD-NOA participating in several projects. He also works as a software engineer for SG Digital and he has worked as a software engineer in the bank sector (2015-2019) where he was in charge for designing, coding and testing financial applications for attended/unattended POS.
John Anagnostakis (M) holds a BSc in Computer Science (Athens University of Economics and Business, 2006),
a Msc in Information Systems (Athens University of Economics and Business, 2009) and a
Bsc in Mathematics (the National & Kapodestrian University of Athens, 2019). Since 2019, he has been working as a software developer and ΙΤ support
at the IERSD-NOA participating in several projects. He also works as a computer science teacher for private
school Sychroni Paideia. During the past, he has worked as software developer for different companies, developing intranet and web applications and as computer science teacher.
