  1. 21. 03 NOV 2024 - 02 NOV 2024 : Dialogue & Action: Climate Crisis, Forest Fires & Resilient Places

    Dr Christos Giannakopoulos participated, as  a speaker, at  the two-day forum of the Municipality of Messine, titled as  "Dialogue & Action: Climate Crisis, Forest Fires & Resilient Places". The forum  took place on November 2 and 3, 2024 at the Messine City Hall and  aims to bring together actors, experts and local communities to address the challenges of the climate crisis and forest fires, with an emphasis on resilience and sustainable development. Dr. Giannakopoulos had 2 presentations : ‘’FireRes  project’’ and ‘’Climate Services for Institutions and the General Public’’.

     


  2. 22. 14 OCT 2024 - 16 OCT 2024 : Workshop for Climate Change Adaptation in the Region of East Macedonia-Thace

    Giannis Lemesios on behalf of CLIMADAPT team, participated in the 3-days workshop for Climate Change Adaptation in the Region of East Macedonia-Thace , which took place in the cities of Komotini (14&15/10) and Xanthi (16/10) . The seminar was co-organized by the Green Fund and the Region of Eastern Macedonia-Thrace in the framework of LIFE-IP AdaptInGR project .

     


  3. 23. 08 OCT 2024 - 12 OCT 2024 : EUROENGEO 2024

    Gianna Kitsara, on behalf of CLIMADAPT team, participated in the 4th European Regional Conference of IAEG, held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, from October 8th to 12th, 2024, with 2 poster presentations titled as: Climate Change Adaptation and Cultural Heritage: 1) The Case Study of the Archaeological site of Ancient Messene, Greece, 2) Evaluating the Effectiveness οf Landslide Mitigation Measures Using MCDA Methods and SNAP Software.


  4. 24. 30 SEP 2024 - 03 OCT 2024 : 18th Plinius Conference on Mediterranean Risks

    Myrto Gratsea and Anna Karali, members of the CLIMADAPT team, participated in the 18th Plinius Conference on Mediterranean Risks presenting 2 posters: 1)Modelling future risk of forest and peri-urban fires for an eastern Mediterranean environment: the case of Greece and 2) Use of the return period methodology for the prediction of weather events with adverse impacts -  case studies for the agricultural and hydrological sectors.

     


  5. 25. 24 SEP 2024 - 27 SEP 2024 : 7th MedCLIVAR and the 12th SISC Annual Conference

    Tim van der Schriek,  on behalf of CLIMADAPT team, participated in the 7th MedCLIVAR and the 12th SISC Annual Conference, from 24 to 27 September 2024 at the University of Salento (Lecce, Italy) presenting 3 posters: 1) Changing multidecadal precipitation characteristics and rising temperatures: an explanation for the extremely low volume of Lake Prespa (SW Balkans), 2) Quantifying the impact of climate change on tourism demand: the case of Greece, and 3) Using Intensity – Duration (ID) Thresholds and Remote Sensing Techniques to Address the Impact of Medicanes on Landslide Activation and Flooding


  6. 26. 02 SEP 2024 - 06 SEP 2024 : EMS Annual Meeting

    Konstantinos V.  Varotsos, on behalf of CLIMADAPT team, participated in the EMS Annual Meeting 2024 from 2 to 6 September at the University of Barcelona. The oral presentation was entitled:  High resolution observational daily gridded dataset for Greece: The CLIMADAT-hub project  


  7. 27. 27 JUL 2024 - 02 AUG 2024 : Sixty-first Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-61)

    Dr. Christos Giannakopoulos participated, as the IPCC's focal point for Greece , in the Sixty-first Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-61) which took place in in Sofia, Bulgaria, from 27 July to 2 August 2024. The Session was dedicated, among other matters, to the outline of the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Cities, the outline of the Methodology Report on Short-Lived Climate Forcers (SLCF) as well as the Strategic Planning Schedule for the seventh assessment cycle.

  8. 28. 28 JUN 2024: Adapting to climate change: threats and opportunities for landscape and cultural heritage management

    Dr Christos Giannakopoulos participated in the  Special Session ''Adapting to climate change: threats and opportunities for landscape and cultural heritage management'' of the 6th international conference on Changing Cities CCVI: Spatial, Design, Landscape, Heritage and Socio-Economic dimensions “Climate Crisis. Cities’ transitions towards smart & green development” helded in , Rhodes Island, Greece from 24 to 28 June 2024.
    Dr Giannakopoulos presented Climadapt's group new project ''CLIMADAT-hub :'High resolution gridded CLIMAte change DATasets for Greece''


  9. 29. 26 JUN 2024 - 28 JUN 2024 : 3-day workshop for Climate Change Adaptation in the Region of Peloponnese

    Giannis Lemesios, from CLIMADAPT team, participated in the 3-days workshop for Climate Change Adaptation in the Region of Peloponnese ,in the framework of LIFE-IP AdaptInGR project, which took place in  the headquarters of the Region in Sparti,  from 26 to 28 of June 2024. G Lemesios had an oral presentation titled as:, 'Online tools and use of climate indices' and participated in the conversations during panels and several sections of the workshop.


  10. 30. 19 JUN 2024: Climate Change and Security

    Gianna and John Lemesios from the CLIMADAPT team participated in the ESDC course “Climate Change and Security” organised by the National Centre for Scientific Research Demokritos, Deree & Center of Excellence in Sustainability, under the auspices of the European Security and Defence College  which took place in Athens at the Deree,  American College of Greece  . The CLIMADAPT team had oral presentation titled as: 'Use of tools developed within the framework of LIFE IP AdaptInGr ' and participated in the conversations during  the 1st Session: LIFE-IP AdaptInGr - Workshop on Vulnerability Assessment and Use of Climate Indicators for designing adaptation options of the workshop

  • Rethink: Summer Holidays on BBC Radio 4 in the UK (live at 8pm ,2025-06-30). Dr Christos Giannakopoulos had an insightful conversation with the BBC radio presenter Ben Ansell, an Oxford University professor, about overtourism, climate change and the pressures of the traditional "summer holiday" model with a particular interest in Mediteranean destinations, which are affected by many of these issues. Dr Christos Giannakopoulos talked about the challenges of climate change for Greek tourism, about how the tourist economy is changing to get around the twin pressures of climate change (heat stress, energy for cooling) and overtourism, and about what Greek tourism might look like in 30 years time
