CLimate change IMpacts and ADAPTation group
Gianna Kitsara and Giannis Lemesios, from CLIMADAPT team, participated in the 3-days workshop for Climate Change Adaptation in the Region of Central Macedonia ,in the framework of LIFE-IP AdaptInGR project, which took place in the headquarters of the Region in Thessaloniki, from 3 to 5 of April 2024. CLIMADAPT team had oral presentations titled as: 'Climate Change projections in the Region of Central Macedonia' , 'Online tools and use of climate indices' and participated in the conversations during panels and several sections of the workshop.
Interview of Dr. Christos Giannakopoulos and Tim van der Schreik at the national newspaper '' Kathimerini'' regarding the European project ''MediterRE3'' which promotes the adoption of fire-smart landscape management practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated by Mediterranean wildfires in the nature parks of Luberon (France), Prokletije and Komovi (Montenegro) and Samaria (Greece). This project is funded by the German Cooperation (GIZ) through the EUKI (European Climate Initiative) instrument. Climadapt group Researchers inform the readers about the modelling study conducted by the CLIMADAPT/NOA group and Instituto Oikos suggesting that applying fire-smart landscape management practices on just 5% of the high-risk territories may reduce the area burned annually by 15%.

Dr. Christos Giannakopoulos participated, as a speaker, in the hybrid Seminar on climate change and the organization of simulations at school “Training for Trainers – T4T”, which was organized by ELIAMEP (Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy) on February 6-8. His speech was titled ''Future climate trends in Attica region, climate change impacts and adaptation plans''
Dr. Christos Giannakopoulos participated as an expert on the Green Expert Panel organized by the National Social Center Research (EKKE) in Athens on Monday 22 January 2024. This was a closed panel of experts, in the framework of JustReDi project ( within the National Recovery and Resilience Plan Greece 2.0 ) , with the aim of green transition in terms of equity, resilience, sustainable development and social inclusion.
Dr. Christos Giannakopoulos participated, as the IPCC's focal point for Greece ,in the 60th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-60) which took place in Istanbul, Türkiye from 16 to 19 January 2024 . The Sixtieth Session of the IPCC was the first substantive meeting of the Panel for its seventh assessment cycle. During this meeting, the IPCC took crucial decisions on its work plan for the coming years, including on the products and timelines for its outputs.
Ioannis Lemesios, representing the CLIMADAT team, engaged in a roundtable discussion on “Innovative Reforms for a Resilient Future. Turning Challenges into Opportunities for the Greek Countryside” during the 30th AGROTICA 2024. The event was organized by the Minister of Rural Development and Food, Lefteris Avgenakis, and was hosted at The Met Hotel in Thessaloniki, Greece
Gianna Kitsara, from CLIMADAPT team, participated, as a speaker, in the Multiplier event: "Forging synergies for climate action and advocacy: The role of educational institutions in tackling climate change" in the framework of the EU-funded project GreenVETers , organized by the Web2Learn and the Library of the University of Macedonia. The event took place in Thessaloniki on 14/12/2023. Her oral presentation was titled ''The National Observatory of Athens’ climate advocacy actions''
Gianna Kitsara, from CLIMADAPT team, participated, as a speaker, in the event '' Climathon - Agia Paraskevi '' of the General Secretariat of Natural Environment and Water which took place on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at the American College of Greece in collaboration with the American College of Greece, the Sustainable Development Unit – EK ATHINA and the Municipality of Agia Paraskevi, under the auspices of the Green Fund and with the support of the Athens University of Economics and Business and the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR project. Dr. Gianna Kitsara with Dr. Spyridoula Demiri, LIFE-IP AdaptInGR Project Manager for the Green Fund held a workshop on the integration of Climate Change indicators in designing solutions and the use of web tools developed in the framework of the LIFE IP project.
Dr. Christos Giannakopoulos was a speaker in the final event of Trophy-Food 2023 , titled "The next day of the Agri-Food sector - Environment, Sustainability, Innovation", which will took place on Tuesday, November 28, 17:00-20:30, at the Athens Conservatory. Dr. Christos Giannakopoulos participated, with the journalist Christina Vidou, in the Fire Side Chat: The Next Day of the Agri-Food Sector - Climate Services and Climate Projection Tools.
Gianna Kitsara , from CLIMADAPT team, participated in 6th World Landslide Forum 'Landslide Science for Sustainable Development' , held in Florence, Italy from 14 to 17 November 2024, with a poster presentation titled as: Interconnection of Landslides’ activation with Mediterranean Cyclones. The case of Cephalonia Island, Greece.
